1.3

How do I answer that 1.3?

For question 1 and 2 it’s ABC:

Answer the question directly in the first sentence

Back up your idea with evidence from the sources

Continue answering with more points and evidence

For question 3 if it’s ‘How would you go about checking the reliability of this source?’ use PEAC:

Purpose – Check why the source was made – have a look at what type of source it is and tell the marker how you would find out why it was created.  Sources made as propaganda/advertising are less reliable.  Sources made to inform are more reliable.

Evidence – How would you check the facts are correct?  Which types of other sources would you use to compare and see if it’s correct?  Be specific, e.g. ‘I would check the military enlistment records of 1916 to see if that many people did join the army.’

Author – How would you check if the author was reliable?  In primary sources you are trying to see if the author was there.  In secondary sources you need to find out if they are an expert in what they are writing about.  For both you need to find out if the author has a reason to be biassed.  Ways to check this are using the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography or looking at the ‘About the Author’ section in a book.  You could also search for other information to see if people have other opinions about the author.  For example, look in another book about the topic to see if people mention that person.

Context – Was anything happening at the time when the author was writing that would affect their reliability?  For example, Pakeha writing about Maori tended to be biassed until the 1970s.  Have a look in the other sources provided in the booklet to see if they mention the context for the source you are checking.  If you can’t think of anything, just mention that you would look and check.
